The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance is a Life Saving Emergency Service dedicated to it’s local community. It is a Care Quality Commission registered charity providing critical emergency medical treatment. The emergency helicopter and pilot delivers their medical team, consisting of a senior doctor and critical care paramedic, to the scenes of the most serious medical and traumatic incidents in the region where their priority is to deliver crucial life saving care to those most in need and transport them rapidly to the most appropriate hospital for immediate medical attention.
Essex & Herts Air Ambulance operate two helicopters, one based at Earls Colne near Colchester and the other at North Weald airfield, and to be without them would be disastrous. At very short notice Epping Forest District Council advised them they were required to shut down power to the entire North Weald airfield site to carry out essential maintenance.
It was therefore imperative for Essex & Herts Air Ambulance to take immediate action and make some very quick decisions as to their capabilities of continuing to provide lifesaving medical services without power at the air base.
Unfortunately, given the type of equipment and drugs onboard, without power it would not be possible to provide Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) for the duration of the proposed shutdown. The only solution was to find a company that, at 24hrs notice, could provide an external generator to power the air base.
After a very short search the Deputy Clinical Manager discovered Templant; a locally based generator hire company. Following a brief conversation Templant’s Power experts were very confident they could help with Essex & Herts Air Ambulance’s power requirements and came out to assess and advise on a suitable power hire solution.
Templant arrived at the air base the next day to install a 135kVA generator while the essential planned maintenance was undertaken. This was carried out with minimal disruption to their operations ensuring continuity of delivering the care when needed and uninterrupted.
