POWER WITH CONFIDENCE
The rental sector encompasses many industries and equipment categories. Templant specialises in temporary power solutions, offering generator hire, Stage V generators, battery energy storage systems, fuel tanks, load banks, distribution, and cable. Despite their extensive capabilities, we remain a family business at heart, committed to delivering reliable service with a personal touch.
Chance encounters can often lead to unexpected outcomes. Taking a short break during the EHS Wales & West Roadshow, I soon found myself in conversation with Jordan Prescott, Head of Sales at Templant. Several weeks later I was en route to the company, deep in the Essex countryside. An unassuming and quiet location for a business that turns out to be much larger and more diverse than I’d initially imagined.
Jordan and Marketing Exec Harry Muir are on hand to deliver the tour and undertake interview duties, so we begin with obvious questions – what’s the company story and who was involved?
“The family run company was incorporated in 1997 by Richard and Sandra Allen, and in 2016, we relocated to our current base to accommodate a growing fleet.Originally specialising in cable and distribution, we established ourselves as a leading specialist. Around 2006, we saw an opportunity to diversify and expand our offerings by investing in generators. Today we are led by Chris and Zoe Allen, the Operations and Accounts Directors. Their focus remains on investment in both personnel and equipment to support the company’s continued growth.” says Jordan.
And what an unexpectedly large business it is, a substantial gate protecting a large yard, a sizeable warehouse, and separate office facilities. In terms of its foremost stock-in-trade, the company offers generators from a modest 20kVA to a mighty 1250kVA, with battery energy storage systems (BESS). How big is the fleet and what’s the most popular item?
“We’ve got a fleet of over 500 generators, ranging from 20kVA to 1250kVA, plus a growing range of battery energy storage systems. Our most popular generator is the 500kVA for sure—they are used across the board, from construction sites to hospitals and data centres.”
With such large units to move, Templant has its own heavy haulage fleet – including eight HIAB-equipped lorries. Do you also need your own transport because you have a high utilisation?
“Yes, having our own transport is essential, it means we’re not relying on third parties, especially in emergencies,” says Harry. “It gives us complete control over our operations, enabling us to work around the clock, 365 days a year. We’re always managing equipment movements, so planning ahead is key. As soon as a generator returns, we carry out all the necessary checks, usually turning it around within 24 hours. Of course, during our busiest periods our turn around is much faster”
Battery Energy Storage Systems and Sustainable Solutions
I see that battery energy storage has been part of your range for some time—are you noticing any recent increased demand, or do customers still have reservations?
“We’ve definitely seen a growing interest in batteries. Many of our customers are looking for ways to reduce fuel costs and emissions, and integrating battery storage with generators offers a great solution. That said, some customers still have reservations—mostly around cost, unfamiliarity with the technology, or concerns about runtime and power output. To address this, we focus on educating clients about the benefits, such as fuel savings, reduced maintenance, and a lower environmental impact.”
The Templant website lists generator hire in many different sectors. What sort of jobs have you been involved in?
“We work across a huge range of sectors, from construction and utilities to events and emergencies,” says Harry. “One day, we could be supplying backup power to a hospital or data centres, and the next, we’re supporting a major infrastructure project. We’ve recently been awarded a contract to supply emergency generators for Essex and Suffolk Water. No two days are the same, and that’s what keeps things interesting.”
We often see solar/hybrid equipment at the Executive Hire Show, although I don’t see any of this in your fleet. Is this something you’re exploring?
“We’re definitely exploring it,” says Jordan. “Right now, our focus is on battery energy storage systems because they offer a proven way to cut fuel consumption and emissions. Solar has its place, but for our type of work—where power demand can be unpredictable and high—batteries integrated with generators provide the best balance of efficiency. We’re having conversations with customers at the moment, watch this space!” says Jordan
Exploring solar/hybrid and hydrogen solutions are not your only sustainability measures. What can you tell me about ‘SulNOx’?
“SulNOx is a cutting-edge eco-fuel conditioner that has already made a significant impact in the marine sector, and it’s proving to be a great fit for our fleet as well. Testing with Socotec showed an immediate 97% reduction in particulate matter, over 30% lower emissions. We’re currently trialing it with select customers, and the results have been really promising. As adoption grows, we plan to roll it out more widely to help further reduce emissions and improve efficiency across our operations.”
Growth and the Future
Right, how about trading – it’s been a bit unpredictable for some hire businesses, but how’s it been for you?
“It’s been a strong year for us. We’ve stayed busy because we work across so many different industries. The demand for temporary power is still high, and with our investment in new equipment, we are staying ahead. So overall, we’re in a good place and continuing to grow. What sets us apart is being a family-run business with unmatched experience—it’s the foundation of our exceptional service, and we wouldn’t want to change that.”
